Good Quality Band Watching

by the Provident Woman | October 10th, 2009

Who doesn’t love a little college football? Well I’m not sitting through an entire game with 3 kids. It’s just not going to happen. Well it’s more like they wont sit through an entire game. So we found something better.

It was band day. A bunch of high school bands were performing at the game during half time. But first there was a parade. And my favorite part… It was free…. Who needs to pay to watch football when the kids like the band the most and you can see a bunch of them for free. Let’s get past my cheapness, shall we.

Waiting for bands to come marching by is tough stuff for kids. So they found great ways to entertain themselves. Perhaps we shouldn’t have allowed them to strip the tree of a gazillion leaves. Oh, well. It’s fall now, they’ll fall off anyway.

The girls pick them off and he picks them up. We stopped him before he ate very many.

Yeah, woo hooo! Here comes the bands.

He was awe struck.

Look at those cool hats. I want one. Yeah, I know. I want a lot of things.

They were so excited to watch them. They sat curb-side so well.

And then got too excited to stay seated.

March, one, two, three, march, one, two, three. Is that how it works? Is that what goes through their minds. Oh, wait. No, it’s probably the music.

Little brother wanted to march with them. Luckily big sis was there to hold him back. “No hair pulling, young lady.”

What a great way to spend time together.

Parades are awesome! My family loves it whenever there is one to attend. Though I think the kids like it more for the candy they score from various politicians, etc. who walk the route.

I was a band geek in high school and college (played tenor saxophone), and I can tell you that those hats are pretty uncomfortable. Especially after playing an instrument and walking the parade route for a few hours. I always wished that the hat makers could construct them with little fans inside to cool us off.

When marching like that, I tended to focus on staying in step and staying in line with the people around me (it looks really bad if someone is out of step or is ahead/behind the line they are in). The music was secondary — we’d practiced it so much, my fingers were on auto-pilot.

We have a band day here also. My kids are older now but when they were small they couldn’t wait.
I can see you are using your Nikon. (alot more then me). Beautiful pictures. Don’t laugh but I was in Vegas for a optical show and I didn’t take my camera beleive it or not I was to nervous something would happen to it. I know I would never be able to replace it. At 54 you would think I would get a grip and enjoy it instead of just looking at it and saying how pretty it is ,LOL. The best part of this story is I even got photoshop CS4 to go with it. My bosses were very kind to me. I guess they thought after 30 years I deserve some fun.
OK I’ll give myself kick in the butt to get started.

Your children are beautiful…..I love the photo of them sitting curbside as the parade started! I use to take mine to see local parades in our area when they were small…..to watch a parade through a child’s eyes is the best day ever!

Great photos of the kids! Our oldest was in colorgard & then taught it for quite a few years..I loved the feeling from the power of the music. Soooo much work in a marching band! Sounds like a really fun afternoon..even better that it was FREEEEEE!

I love band. I was in band for 8 years. I did color guard in high school, though. I had no interest in marching with an instrument. Where was this parade at? My high school was in a band day parade yesterday.
