I may be slow…

by the Provident Woman | October 29th, 2009

Driving with my husband is taking my life and putting it in his hands. Which he doesn’t seem to be too concerned about when he drives. I have to hold on for dear life more than I like to think about. He gets too close to the car in front of him. He stops abruptly right before he hits the car stopped in front of him. He swerves. He speeds (though he tries not to speed TOO much). He’s altogether crazy. I think he was a race car driver in another life. Maybe not…

We were driving home the other day from his parents house and as I am gripping my seat so hard my fingers are turning white, he has to slam on his brakes or hit the car in front of him that is going WAY under the speed limit. Usually I start yelling, wait I don’t yell. I started talking in a stern concerned for all of our safety voice. “ARE YOU CRAZY? YOUR CHILDREN ARE IN THE CAR. WHY DO YOU TRY TO KILL US? DON’T RIDE SO CLOSE TO CARS.” There are many more phrases I use often but you get the point.

This time I didn’t yell. I started laughing hysterically. My husband thought I lost my mind until he realized what I was laughing at. Then he too was laughing. This almost immediately made me stop because I was again instantly concerned with our safety because he was driving and laughing so hard I don’t think he was looking at the road.

It’s really a never ending scary cycle.

The car in front of us had a bumper sticker that said “I may be slow but I’m in front of you.”

So well said.

Sounds like Clint. He always was a crazy driver. When we would drive to school he would purposely drive fast through the mud puddles…there were holes in the floor board, so Alisha and I would subsequently get splashed with mud!

Also, can’t wait for you to come visit and have you ride with him on the German autobahn…no speed limit!

Sounds like riding with my teenaged daughter while teaching her to drive!! :)

My dad was the slow one who drove people nuts. My mom was a zoomer. My son is half and half, Alpha Hubby? A very calm, assured driver except for the tendency toward a wee bit of a heavy foot on the gas pedal. I am the seat gripper if I’m a passenger and a HEAVENLY driver. Really! I never got over Driver’s Ed and still follow all the rules – to the disgust of everyone in my family. Driver’s Ed scarred me for life.

I have the best of both worlds really, my husband is crazy and out of control. My dad? He needs that bumper sticker! (He is always amazed when I drive the speed limit on the interstate just how fast I can make it from one place to another. LOL! )

That could be me and my husband, for sure. We’ve had many-a-argument over automobile safety. I think he drives like a race car driver, he thinks I drive like a grandma. We’re probably both right. :-)

I can so relate to this post! I end up looking out the side window when my husband is driving because otherwise I am hitting my imaginary breaks on the passenger side. I used to start yelling but it only caused my husband to react by turning the wheel suddenly. It was just a normal response but I find it easier to not pay attention. He reminds me that he’s never been in an accident in 25 years together.

That bumper sticker is funny :) . I’m glad that your husband stopped in time before hitting the car. Otherwise, it wouldn’t be funny anymore.

This definitely made me LOL. I am a pretty bad driver.
