Potato Peel Pie

by the Provident Woman | August 27th, 2009

So last  night was book club. I got to hold it at my house (I did this so I would actually be guaranteed to attend.) Our book was The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. GREAT BOOK! A fun read.

But the best part of book club isn’t the book. Believe me some ladies come who have never read the book. We really hold book club for the food. So I had to come up with something that everyone would like and that somewhat went along with the book.

So after pulling out most of my hair and procrastinating until just hours before the ladies were set to arrive I finally started making stuff. (And no, we do not discriminate against men, they just choose not to join us. Which is great for us, built in babysitters on book club night.)

I wanted to make an actual potato peel pie. But I don’t think anyone would eat it. The book said there was mashed potato in the pie so I thought well a sweet potato pie it is!

But that couldn’t be all I serve. So what else, what else. In the book they ate a pig. But who wants pork anything at 8 or 9 at night. What else, what else. I finally thought “hmmmm, scones is a British thing, right?”. Alrighty. And I have some strawberries in the fridge. So strawberry scones it is.

Then I thought “well, I’m not making food out of pig but I do have a big pig cookie cutter.” So then were born pig scones. But afterwards I regretted this choice a little.

With the strawberries in the center it looks like I tried to gut the pigs. Sorry to be so graphic. But at least they tasted good.

And I don’t drink tea, but I did have the makings of some mean lemonade around.

Well, this is all I can say about this. My youngest is biting at the butt of my pants. I need stools with backs to them. Seriously he is biting my butt. Ouch! This has to stop. Blog to ya later.

I LOVED this book. Are you on GoodReads.com? Great website to list all the books you’ve ever read and then write and read reviews about books.

The gutted pig is hilarious. He (She?) made my morning thanks!

I miss the bite butting days, now it’s teenagers who just bite my head….(off), but they’re still cute when they sleep. Thanks for the book idea, needed a good read idea!

Who says no one would eat a potato peel pie? I would certainly give it a go–but then, I’m a little strange, and I haven’t read the book, but I’m going to now!

I never thought I would find myself saying this, but I miss the butt biting days as well…sigh.

thanks for giving me a giggle!

Thanks for visiting my blog and leaving a comment! Your bookclub sounds fun and I love the title of your last book. I think I will have to find that one!

Yes, I do have good insurance… there’s only a few things they won’t pay for. And DH’s employer covered the $2400 deductible this year as they changed innsurance mid year. I tapped out the deductible in one office visit and 2 sets of labs!

Gutted pigs, that’s funny, but anything with strawberries and lemon glaze on them ought to taste good!

I haven’t read this yet, I’ll have to watch for it at the library, thanks!
